a visual summary of my project – verge
Ever since I’ve started my degree in graphic and media design, I’ve realised over the last few years I am very interested in typography, editorials, editorial design, photography, and poster design. That is the reason why I decided to explore 36 days of type and create my own type or font face. I saw a few examples of how people had created their type and I realise that there were no restrictions whatsoever and I could free flow with my imagination so that is one aspect that really caught my eye. I had an idea in mind since the start and I don’t think I budged on that even though I went through a series of iterations and changes throughout I stuck with my primary idea of how I wanted my type to be and how I wanted it to look. My basic idea or inspiration for my day was from Roman structures, Greek structures, Roman and Greek paintings, angelic structures and symbols, fairy tales and fantasies, old Roman font, and old British font. I wanted to create a very classy yet a very detailed type of typeface or font, what I wanted to do was that every letter should have a certain amount of detail to it or a certain amount of imagery to it that it by itself looks like an artwork or a painting. I also wanted the entire typeface to come together as a whole so I did keep a certain narrative throughout, but I wanted each alphabet on its own to be considered as a separate piece of art. I tried inboard colour and monochrome and I felt like monochrome suited my entire idea better. The sense the idea of this was to go unconventional with font, make the font in a way that is never seen before and use different kinds of drawings and ideas to change or to create an unconventional type and I think that freedom is one reason why I really played around with my font and came to the final outcome I have now.
this was my project named ‘access all areas’ the main aim of this project was to observe and record a non-place and design a visual work that communicates through language, typography, materials and presence.
My work is an intervention within a physical ‘non-place’. It aims to connect the viewer to the meaning of the text through its use of relevant typography and its tangible existence.
The work is explicit, arresting, static, reactive, and fixed. The physical form and its materiality are just as significant as the typography and can be seen through the 3-dimensional effect used by contrasting the red and blue in the poster and using anaglyph glasses (seen in visual summary) for vision.
this is my visual summary that includes my step by step preparation for my ‘Access All Areas’ project.
My photography received recognition and was featured in the ‘My month in photos’ in the i-D magazine for April, 2023.
i made this illustration in support of the farmer’s protest that took place in India in 2020. This illustration was about showing the power and the courage people of this religion stand for.
this was a logo i created for my relative’s dessert place, it was just an idea.
My area of interest for this project was ‘social purpose’. this was one of the projects I was most passionate about. i have a personal interest in feminism and this project allowed me to highlight not only that but also the power of the divine feminine in Indian society. I made three final outcomes – a badge, a poster and a zine. in all the works I wanted to use colours that represented Indian culture and society. My research which is shown in my visual summary is what drives me further to be so passionate about this project.
this project gave me the freedom to a level, the text and the colour scheme (black and white) were already given to us. I had to make two posters – one expressive and one formal, in my visual summary you can see there are at least 40/45 iterations for each style of poster. I personally love to create posters or any editorial designs and illustrations, so I could really experiment with this project. even though the lines for experimentation were a bit constrained I was able to explore a lot within the few things given and I feel like that made me really understand the concept of typography, colour balance and placement. i added layers to each project especially the expressive poster through means of composition, treatments, affectations, manipulation processes and much more.
in this project, I looked at the relationship between image production, manipulation, composition and the field of graphic and media design. the aim was to create a sequence after choosing a figure in motion. the motion i chose was my friend doing a cartwheel and related that with body energy levels and used a different colours to show visual representations of that.
this is my final outcome of the transition project – my topic here was human emotions and the animation i drew also shows the connection between the moving images and the sound i have used. the sound in the back is my roomates talking and the different moving images are the different emotions we experience as humans.
this project was about exploring the aim between sound and moving image – how they both are connected and how they give meaning to one another
my final outcome was a personalized space or cabin at the beach and this is what the final outcome looks like
the aim of this project was to identify a space with functionality and to propose an improved or radical use to respond to public or professional needs in light of cultural and/or environment change. the focus was also to make the space more functional, efficient, forward-facing and more exciting.
This project was about creating a poster in relation to a movie of my choice using skills such as typography, repetition, overlapping and more. i chose the movie “house of Gucci” and used a specific color palette to create a poster with the main element being typography.
My main goal was to improve my editing skills and we find them a lot by my last project in this course and I have been able to do that very successfully and that can’t be seen in my work itself. Through this project, I have achieved both personal and professional development. Personally, I was able to manage my time better I was and learn more about anything and techniques here’s as well, I was also able to successfully put all the things I have learned over the last year into this project in a way that made each and every image and edit stand out very prominently and combine that in my project as well, but I do not have any regrets as I was able to find more of my style and show my originality through this project as well. I feel like I could have done more extensive secondary research about different artists and the designs of photo books but I do think that I have sort of created my own style through this project as well. further in my bachelor’s of graphic in media design. Exhibiting a photo book digitally was the best option but due to the current circumstances it’s all I have to do but if I was given a chance to exhibit this work of mind in a way that I could I would have printed large posters of my double-page spreads and viewed it out and I would have even printed out many samples of my photo birth for exhibition. I feel like my work, exclusively this photo book goes to a large group of the audience out there it is not only restrained to a specific age group. I feel like each and every day at grow to be at younger than me or elder than I would have a very different perspective and a different thought towards each of the images that I have produced in my photo book and that is what makes it an interesting because no one will have same understanding or attachment towards each edit in each photo that I have.
My final outcome for my 16-page photo book came as I expected it to be. Because of my time management, day-to-day planning, and making realistic deadlines this time I was able to successfully achieve all my desired outcomes in the given time and had no rush in any of my work. I had enough time to edit each and every emerge at least 4 to 5 times and do a thorough revision of my entire project at least 3 times before submission. I feel like over the last few projects from where I started to where I am now I have really improved in all my skills that include time management, editing and finally putting the end product together. I do feel that I could have done more extensive secondary research but as I started highlighting my pictures even though I do not have physical proof of doing it I did get to do a lot of research on my own and that increase my learning a lot in this project first stop I feel that I have been able to understand the concept of graphic and media much better through this project as well. I personally I’m very impressed by my development in the project and my overall development in growth in my skills and techniques. I have been able to follow and take all my deadline boxes as they came and had no hesitation or problem with the deadline of this project as well. I do feel like I could have had more one or water tutorial with my teachers so as to get more feedback about my final project and I wish to do that next time.
My final outcome for the project is going to be a 16-page photo book. I had made 3 different layout styles for my photo book and finally, I will be pursuing the last style which is a mixture of all the different types of editing that I’ve used in all 3 layouts. I’ll be following the traditional book layout with the text on the left side and the photos on the right side as I will have 8 pages with photos I’ll be using columns in multiples of 2 as the pages increase. My first page will be the text and the second page should be one photo, the 3rd page will be text and the 4th page will be divided into 2 columns that are 2 photos, the 5th page will be text and the 6 pages will be divided into 3 columns and the 7th page will be text while the edge page is divided into 4 columns. Then after the 8th page, the columns will start decreasing in the same order from being divided into 4 columns to being divided into 3 columns to be being divided into 2 columns and to finally one picture on the last and 16th page. Through every page UBC transformation of my photos and within the columns you will see the transformation of the same photo in 2 different styles using different forms of editing such as change of color, change of tones, typography, manipulation of text, distortion and etc. this is how I will be following through with my idea and producing my final outcome of a 16-page photo book.
The word transform has various meanings to be – both positive and negative as well. Transformation to me means changing of a particular thing, development, growth, depreciation or just minute differences between pictures is also some level of transformation for me. In this project for me, transformation means changing the photos I’ve clicked through changing the image tone, color, filter, manipulation of imagery, typography, and distortion of the image. Transformation of each of these images through all these edits will take a new perspective on the word transformation as well and will also show all the skills I’ve learned this year through my course. I will be making a sixteen-page photo book for my outcome, and all the photos that will be edited will be clicked by me and it will all be my original editing. I will be showing transformation by showing different edits of my pictures to show different perspectives.
My final outcome consists of 4 graphical images. The 4 images are based on the data that I have collected from my collection which is the basis of -location, year of collection, age since collection, and what part of the plant it belongs to. All the illustration in my graphic images is hand-drawn and follows the same pattern and design of drawing which is chalk effect with illustration drawing and no boundaries or outlines on the sketch. I’ve used a simple line drawing as the basis of my sketch and have developed the drawing on that further. My graphic images clearly communicate the data through visual representation as well. I made my images as simple and clear I good so that they would be clearly communicated to the audience without any doubt or misunderstanding. I’ve certainly learned a lot about graphic images after this project and came across a new concept of data visualization and visual representation, and my understanding and learning can be seen through the growth and development of my project.
For my project, I’ll be making graphic images with data visualization of my collection. The basis of data collected will be -the time it was collected (year), how old is it now, the location of where it was collected, and what part of the plant does the object belongs to. The first option will be done in the form of a timeline, the second with an animated image of a plant, the third in the form of a pictograph and the 4th will be done with a detailed analysis of a plant and a bar graph to support the data. I’ll start making the graphic images from tomorrow itself so that I am done with it by the first week of March and have enough time to edit and make any changes required till the deadline. The images will be very plain and sophisticated and will provide clear communication of data to the viewer. the images will be in the color combination of plants (different shades of greens and browns ) and will only show emphasis on the data I’ve collected and the visual communication that will be in the picture.
The option I have chosen is to click 3 to 5 graphic images of my collection’s data. After a lot of thought and trial and error, I finally chose what my collection will be of. My collection is 25 preserved leaves and Flowers that I’ve collected over the last three years from different locations all over the world (India, Dubai, Switzerland, and United Kingdom ). I’ve studied each object in my collection very thoroughly and seriously to see the similarities and differences among the objects in my collection and to also find the binding factor that makes all my objects together with a ‘collection ‘. I intend on showing at least four pictures that visually show the data I have collected in different aspects and communicate the facts and figures through visual language. After being really confused as to what data visualization is I tried it with my own project and got a much better understanding of it. My next step is to start collecting data under various bases and narrow down my selections two at least five topics and create graphical illustrations on them.
This is an explanation of my demonstration project. I’ve used the traditional page layout with the photos on the right side in the text on the left. my project is quite complex hence I’m writing this explanation so that the viewer gets a better understanding of my project. My project is built on the lines of a minimalistic color palette with a bright splash of just one color – red. Every 2 sides/2 pages running to each other have a great story and a great understanding between each other but are in no way linked to the other pages or sides in the magazine. Even though it is a magazine each page does a different story, has a different background, and is only connected on the basis of the monochromatic palette and the color scheme that is followed. I’ve tried to break through by manipulating typography in each and every page and combining traditional methods, typography, and layout with the modern-day editing, eye to design and manipulation of imagery and typography. the cover pages of my project are very minimalistic and very simple which gives a wrong perception of what might be inside, thus following through with my idea of “breaking through boundaries”. My project, on one hand, being very minimalistic, basic, and simple is also very versatile and very complex through its art and the ideas behind each artwork.
Survive – page 1 – the first artwork follows the monochromatic in the word colour scheme unanswered tells us the importance to read which is to survive in the freehand text it also comments ‘read for what ‘. the use of a traditional font along with handwritten text and the showcasing of books, one of the oldest known things to earth along with the modern-day editing is what shows the contrast.
Wedding – page 2 – this peace shows the modern they were in traditions with a 1947 news Bombay newspaper in the background. Again with the text, it is and all traditional text but the meaning of the word is something completely modern, and even the hand-drawn fixtures at the back breakthrough the entire composition of the artwork.
Protection – page 3 – this one is just a modern-day graphical layout with manipulation and repetition of typography and using the same color palette with a lot of red to emphasize the word protection.
Sights – page 5 – this is the same image being shown in a black and white format and colorful format. The red and black strings show how culture and religion can be changed, deferred, and completely rationalized, They show the misunderstanding of wrong connections and the wrong views we make through our eyes just because of our beliefs or believes that we have been forced to believe
Heights – page 6 – this one comes with the traditional and the very old saying which is also very intellectual – ‘fear of Heights of fear of falling ‘ no while this was very traditional alongside is a very unique and unfamiliar perspective of viewing the Burj Khalifa, so rather than looking at buildings from the top and being scared of Heights this perspective puts the question from the bottom 2 when you look up to the building, again a modern approach to a very traditional and all saying.
Culture – page 4 – this artwork represents unity, difference, and how about all those as people, as humans we still rise together. Along with being written in English, the word culture has been written in Sanskrit, Punjabi, Arabic, and Bengali. This artwork of mine is with special focus on India and how even though we are such a diverse country we are unified together on so many bases one of them being our culture, our religion, and backgrounds. The use of structure typography alongside hand handwritten codes on the photo is the contrast that I have achieved in this artwork
Creators of art – page 7 – this work is one of my biggest inspirations from David Carson. While I’ve been able to manipulate and use repetitive typography in this heart work alongside a very block font, on the other hand, I’ve been able to use I lose handwritten font to answer the very bored, strong an old-time question ‘who are we ‘. The child of the easel is a representation of all the future artists discovering who they are.
Eyes – page 8 – this is a completely modern-day edit, with the use of all Roman English font – that is the contrast. Otherwise, the bold use of red in both the images and the hand drawing along with Photoshop editing makes it a truly modern-day graphic design edit.
By outcome for project “Demonstration” has not only reached but also exceeded my expectations. At first, I made a strong foundational base for the idea I had chosen. my primary research was already done and my secondary research was quite extensive this time. I was able to incorporate the knowledge and technical skills I had learned into my secondary research in my project and that is quite visible. I stuck with my idea of choosing a minimalistic color pallet – monochrome and a slash of red. Through my manipulation of imagery and typography, I’ve been able to design and edit my artwork successfully. I am yet to add 3 more pages I’ll be doing that this following week. I am done with 5 pages and they are uploaded below. My application of skill and knowledge through my secondary research was very successful and is mainly the reason for the outcome that I have achieved. I was able to follow my plan while also experiencing a lot through multiple trials and errors in my artwork. my time management could have been better, but it was an improvement from the last project. I feel at this time as I successfully established a solid foundation/base plan about my idea I was able to carry out all the work in a better way and I was less stressed. Through handwriting my secondary research I was actually able to use a lot of skills in the knowledge that the people I had researched upon had used in my artwork in my project, which increases the standard of my project highly. Through multiple trials of manipulation and editing of my imagery and typography, I was able to find a hint of my style for my designs. I would surely improve on my time management skills as I do more projects.
ACTION PLAN – today – 25.01.2021 submission – 29.01.2021, action plan for the next 3 days. My action plan for the next 3 days is as follows – today I will be completing the editing of two of my pictures and combining them in page format. I will also be writing my third and final blog post for the project, “Demonstration”. Tomorrow, Tuesday I will be editing my last picture and combining it in the page format for this project and I will be looking at all of my work to see if there are any final edits or touches I want to make. I’ll be making a video of all my screen recordings on procreate and Photoshop, which will show my progress work. On Wednesday I will be combining my entire project and seeing how it looks as a whole and make any changes if I want to. I’ll collect all my primary sources, secondary resources and place them in a folder together and I will continue working on my progress video. On Thursday, the last day I will finalize everything and go through everything again to see if there are any last-minute changes or updates I need to make and I will finalize my project and make it ready for submission on Friday.
STRENGTH- In this project, I was very clear from the beginning what option I would choose, thus I was able to form a well-planned and organized base for my idea. I was able to successfully collect excellent primary research and also use the knowledge I learned through my secondary research in my project work. I am able to connect and relate the primary research and the secondary research to my final outcome very successfully. Through that, this time my project looks complete and well related. I feel like I’ve not only reached but exceeded my personal level of achievement and expectations in this project.
WEAKNESS- As I was following a minimalistic palette throughout my pages I did struggle with ideas and creativity at times. My time management could have been better but was without a doubt better than the last project this time.
OPPORTUNITY- Through this project, I was actually able to try what I actually want to pursue in the future which is graphic designing and I was able to apply the knowledge skills I’ve learned through researching some of the world-famous graphic designers in my project. I feel like I have a much better understanding of graphic designing, and I’ve found a little of my style through the trial and errors of making my artwork for the project.
THREAT- My biggest threat over throughout the project was that both sides of my pages would not be in connectivity and they would not relate to each other, but after a lot of attempts and manipulation of imagery and typography I was able to achieve a strong connection within every page in each page tells its own story. Time management was a threat again, but I was much better I’m managing my time in this project than I was in the ‘location’ and I will improve with every project.
